What is the best way to clean your washing machine?

Cleaning out your washing machine is essential to keep it running efficiently. It prevents unpleasant odors, and ensures your clothes are cleaned properly. Here’s a step-by-step guide for cleaning your washing machine at home:

1. Clean the Drum

Step 1: Run a Hot Cycle with Vinegar

a. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the detergent dispenser or drum.

b. Run a wash cycle using the hottest water setting to break down any mold, mildew, and soap scum.

Step 2: Run a Second Cycle with Baking Soda & Lemon Juice

a. After the vinegar cycle, add ½ cup of baking soda directly into the drum. You can also add the juice from half a lemon to freshen up the machine.

b. Run another hot water cycle to remove any lingering odors and debris.

2. Clean the Door Seal (for Front-Load Washers)

The rubber gasket around the door can accumulate mold, mildew, and detergent residue. Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and gently clean the rubber seal.

3. Clean the Detergent Dispenser

Detergent drawers can become clogged with soap and fabric softener residue.

  • Remove the detergent tray if possible and soak it in warm, soapy water.
  • Scrub with an old toothbrush to remove any buildup.
  • Rinse thoroughly and let it dry before placing it back.

4. Clean the Filter (if applicable)

Some washing machines have a filter that traps lint, debris, and small objects.

  • Check your machine’s manual to locate the filter (often at the bottom front of front-load washers).
  • Remove the filter, clean out any debris, and rinse it under warm water.

5. Wipe Down the Exterior

  • Clean the outside of the machine using a damp cloth and mild detergent to remove dust, dirt, and detergent spills.

6. Prevent Future Build-Up

  • Leave the door open between washes to allow air to circulate and prevent mold growth.
  • Use high-efficiency (HE) detergent to avoid excessive suds and residue.
  • Clean the machine monthly or every 30 cycles to maintain freshness and efficiency.

By following these steps, you can keep your washing machine clean and working efficiently.
